Detailed Job Descriptions

The sort of jobs within a theatre or arts organisation will depend on the size of the company and the work it is doing. A small theatre like The Gate in Notting Hill might only have one stage manager who is a permanent staff member, whereas somewhere the size of the National Theatre will have a huge team of stage managers.

Generally most people will go into their first job as an assistant, and then move up to be a deputy that can lead to a position as head of department. Again the size of organisation and the sort of work they do will dictate the level at which most first time employees start.

A key difference in theatre jobs is based on the terms of employment.

Permanent - an open ended contract which will only be ended when the employee chooses to go on to another job or in the case of redundancy or misconduct.

Fixed term contract - a contract that is for a fixed period of time, possibly to cover a particular production period, the run of a particular show or a rehearsal period.

Freelance - work on a self employed basis, moving between jobs and possibly working to more than one contract at any one time.

Casual - work that is offered for short periods of time.
