Frequently Asked Questions

How old do you have to be to take part?

Between the ages of 8 and 25 years old.

I don't live in Lambeth or Southwark. Can I still join in?

Unfortunately all our projects are for young people who live or go to school or college in Lambeth & Southwark. If you live in other boroughs there may be a theatre local to you that can help. However our under 16 and under 26 discounts are available to all.

How do you split the age groups?

We currently have 6 age groups for projects
8 - 10 years old
11 - 13 years old
14 - 15 years old
16 - 20 years old
14 - 20 years old
18 - 25 years old

Depending on the nature of the project we decide what age group is appropriate.

Do you have any projects for those over 21?

We provide training opportunities for all aspects of theatre for people age 18-25. Find out about them here. If you're interested in directing you might find our director's programme of interest.

What would you like us to do next?

Your details will be entered onto a database and the next time a project that is suitable for your age group you will be sent information on how to take part.

If I apply am I guaranteed a place on the project?

We try to give as many people as possible an opportunity to take part in our projects. We usually oversubscribed for our projects, particularly for projects for those aged between 8 and 10, and also those aged 11 and 13.
This therefore means that we are not always able to give everyone a place who applies.

Do I audition to take part?

If you are aged between 7 and 13 years old, there is no audition process. We only ask that you have an interest in taking part in theatre. We create a balanced group of girls and boys, with a range of ages and from a range of schools. There is also a mix of those who have taken part in projects before and those for whom it may be a new experience.

If you are aged 14 - 20 year old, again there is no audition process, but there are often two parts to a project. Usually the first section is an opportunity for a large number, usually between 60 and 80 young people to take part in introductory and skills based workshops. The second week involves a smaller group working towards a performance or showing for family and friends.

How many projects a year do you have?

We aim to have projects in most school holidays (except Christmas) and half term breaks.
We always have projects for both the 8 - 13 and 14 - 20 year age groups during the summer holidays.

Do I need experience in theatre or acting?

No. All you need is enthusiasm and a desire to find out more.

Do I need to prepare anything before I come to a session?

No. You just need to turn up on time and give it a go. Wear comfortable clothing and footwear.

Who else takes part?

Similar interested young people like yourself. Some young people have found out about the Young Vic because they have attended a production with their school, many have never been before but are keen to take part in making theatre. Some people may have taken part in other projects some will be taking part for the first time.

What might happen in a workshop?

Usually a series of games to help you feel relaxed and to get to know the other members of the group. You will then probably start working on the play or idea that is at the centre of the project.

What if I am not interested in performing?

We have opportunities for people to work on the production side of the projects where possible. At other times we run projects specifically about the technical side of theatre.

I am interested in directing, lighting, stage management or the technical aspects of theatre - is there anything I can take part in at your theatre?
