We believe work experience placements play a vital role in preparing students and young people for the world of work. To ensure we can give each person a quality experience it is our policy to offer only one placement at a time. Because of this we give priority to people who live or go to school or college in our home boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark, followed by the other south east London Boroughs.
We particularly support our local secondary schools in placing their students for work experience. Work experience for secondary school students normally run for one or two weeks and offers an overview of how the theatre is run. The student will spend a short time in a variety of departments which may include box office, marketing, production and Taking Part (our work with young people and schools). There is a large demand for these placements and they are dependant on availability. We advise that as soon as you know about your work experience dates, you should contact us.
When possible we also offer placements to further and higher education students, and people looking to gain experience of working in the arts. It is often possible to focus the content, and determine the length of these placements depending on an individual's interest and needs.
If applying, please enclose a copy of your CV, and a letter explaining why you're interested in theatre and the Young Vic and, most importantly, when you would like the placement. Send it to Work Experience, Taking Part, Young Vic, 66 The Cut, London SE1 8LZ.
If you aren't from Lambeth or Southwark you could try contacting your local theatre. All theatres are listed in the British Performing Arts Year Book or Contacts (your local library should have copies). It is advisable to phone the theatres that interest you before sending a letter to ask if they offer work placements and to check the correct person to write to. This way your letter will immediately fall into the right hands, and create a good initial impression.
