Kurt Weill’s STREET SCENE An American Opera Music Kurt Weill Book Elmer Rice Lyrics Langston Hughes This summer, you have the rare chance to experience one of the great American musicals that, alongside The Threepenny Opera and The Rise & Fall of Mahagonny, confirms Kurt Weill as one of the 20th Century’s enduring and popular musical legends. Street Scene is triumphant meeting of Broadway Musical and American Opera, incorporating a dazzling array of show tunes, operatic arias, jazz, blues and spirituals: a musical melting pot that captures the true diversity of working class New York in 1946. Described by Weill as "a simple story of everyday life in a big city, a story of love and passion and greed and death”, it follows the inhabitants of a tenement building over one hot summer’s day. Street Scene is the latest collaboration between The Opera Group and Young Vic, following the success of The Enchanted Pig in 2006, and is produced with a cast of 15 performers, a live orchestra and local young people. Festa is a community production taking inspiration from the Festa Junina held annually in Brazil. The Festa Junina combines the story of a wedding (usually a wedding destined to go wrong!) with traditional dances including the Quadrilha, Maracatu, Coco and Ciranda and live music and song and always ends with a party, food and drink. We are taking many of these references and devising our own version – all of the aspects included will have a performative aspect and will be part of the production (even the food giving and the travelling around the space). It is important to know that our Festa! is a ticketed performance and NOT a street party / fete. There will be a very definite beginning, middle and end. The performance will take place both inside the Young Vic (foyer and main house) and outside on The Cut. The Cut will be closed from 9am with a TEN (temporary events notice) for the duration of the 16 August for rehearsals and then for the performances. The Cut will be decorated in the morning and cleared by 10pm in the evening when the street will re-open. The piece will perform twice on Saturday 16 August at 5pm and at 7.30pm to an audience capacity of up to 400 at each performance. Ticket prices will be £7.50 and the audience will be given a free taste of Brazilian canjica as part of the performance and will be able to buy drinks from the bar (or we may offer a free drink depending on budget) and take them outside within the closed off section. The hour long performance will begin outside on The Cut and on the balcony of the terrace, filter through the foyer and bar into the main house, and then filter back out to end on the street (this is when audiences will receive the small free snack.)
