What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are automatically placed onto your device by some websites that you visit. They are widely used to allow a website to function as well to provide website operators with information on how the site is being used.

We use cookies to keep track of your basket as well as to identify how the website is being used and what improvements we can make.

Our cookies help us:

  • Make our website work as you'd expect
  • Remember your settings during and between visits
  • Improve the speed/security of the site
  • Allow you to share pages with social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest
  • Continuously improve our website for you
  • Make our marketing more efficient (ultimately helping us to offer the service we do at the price we do)

We do not use cookies to:

  • Collect any sensitive information
  • Pay sales commissions

First Party Cookies

Our first party cookies are set by the Young Vic's website and are required to perform basic functionality, such as retaining your selected tickets in the basket whilst you move around our website.

Some of the functionality that first party cookies on our website provide:

  • Making our shopping basket and checkout work
  • Determining if you are logged in or not
  • Remembering your search settings
  • Remembering your preferences such as colours, text size and layout

There is no way to prevent these cookies being set other than to not use our site.

Our Cookie Banner

We have a cookie banner on our site to inform you of our privacy and cookie policies and how you can find out more about each. This banner does not prevent cookies from being dropped when you visit a page on youngvic.org.

Once you click on a link in the banner it will then disappear until you next clear their cookies or open a private browsing session. To ensure you don't see this message every time you visit our site from your device we use a cookie to ensure we remember you've seen this banner, rather than you engaging with it on every visit if possible.

Anonymous Visitor Statistics Cookies

We use cookies to compile visitor statistics such as how many people have visited our website, what type of technology they are using (e.g. Mac or Windows which helps to identify when our site isn't working as it should for particular technologies), how long they spend on the site, what page they look at etc. This helps us to continuously improve our website. These analytics programs also tell us on an anonymous basis how people reached this site (e.g. from a search engine) and whether they have been here before helping us to put more money into developing our services for you instead of marketing spend.

You can opt-out of being tracked by Google Analytics across all websites here: http://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout

Third Party Cookies

We use Google's reCAPTCHA in our ticketing pathway (tickets.youngvic.org) when a user creates a new account. This enables our website to validate you are not an automated bot and helps to protect the security of our site.

Some of the browser and user information collected as part of the reCAPTCHA software:

  • All cookies placed by Google over the last 6 months,
  • How many mouse clicks you’ve made on that screen (or touches if on a touch device)
  • The CSS information for that page
  • The date
  • The language your browser is set to
  • Any plug-ins you have installed on the browser
  • All Javascript objects

This information is shared with Google at the time of use. For more information about how Google uses this information refer to their Privacy Policy or click on the links on the reCAPTCHA button for Google's terms of use.

Also dropped is Google's doubleclick cookie (doubleclick.net). This enables google to improve ad performance across their network and help us improve our reporting on campaign performance, and to avoid showing you ads you may have already seen. There's more info on the doubleclick cookie on support.google.com

To opt out of Google's personalised ads head to: https://adssettings.google.com/authenticated

We host the Facebook Pixel on our site. This pixel enables us to track users (anonymous to us) once they click on one of our Facebook and Instagram adverts. This helps us see how people engage with the content on our website and if they purchase a ticket as a result of clicking on one of our ads.

Whilst it is not possible for a Facebook or Instagram user to entirely opt-out of adverts on the platform itself, you can change what types of adverts you see and the information Facebook uses to target you with adverts.

You may still see adverts from us on Facebook or Instagram after you change your preferences if you sit within some of Facebook's anonymised interest based groups.

Head to your advertising settings on Facebook for more info and to change your advert preferences: https://www.facebook.com/ads/preferences/?entry_product=ad_settings_screen

Some cookies may be set by engaging with embedded media on our site, such as YouTube and Soundcloud or clicking to share with Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest. These cookies are listed below. Find out more about each company’s privacy policy using the links.

Advertising Cookies

Cookies are widely used in online advertising. Neither us, advertisers or our advertising partners can gain personally identifiable information from these cookies.

You can learn more about online advertising at http://www.youronlinechoices.com. You can opt-out of almost all advertising cookies at http://www.youronlinechoices.com/uk/your-ad-choices although we would prefer that you didn't as ultimately adverts help keep much of the internet free. It is also worth noting that opting out of advertising cookies will not mean you won't see adverts, just simply that they won't be tailored to you any longer.
