Listen to director Katie Mitchell talk with writer and broadcaster Edward Seckerson about the show.

Following a sell-out, award-winning 2008 season with Lost Highway and Punch & Judy, ENO and the Young Vic celebrate the 350th anniversary of composer Purcell’s birth with a major new production.

After Dido is an original film and theatre performance directed by Katie Mitchell and the team who made the National Theatre’s Waves and some trace of her. It tells the story of four Londoners on the night of a live anniversary radio broadcast of Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas, and is created by an ensemble of singers and actors using cameras, lights and sound effects, whilst the full score of the opera is performed live.

Christian Curnyn conducts, Susan Bickley sings Dido and the cast includes Amanda Hale (Cordelia, King Lear at the Young Vic) and Sandy McDade (Miss Ellison, Lark Rise to Candleford, BBC).

Katie Mitchell directs After Dido with the team responsible for the National Theatre’s Waves.

Mezzo-soprano Susan Bickley sings Dido.

This production is recommended for those aged 14+
