Accessible Performances

Audio Description

Audio Description is a live verbal commentary on the visual elements of a production. It is delivered in-between dialogue on stage and is picked up by an easy-to-use headset.

Free touch tours are available to book on dates of Audio Described performances, starting from 1:30pm for matinees and 6:30pm for evening performances. Touch tours provide a chance for visually impaired or blind people to get to know the stage, set, and costumes used in the production.

British Sign Language (BSL)

British Sign Language (BSL) is a form of sign language. A highly trained professional BSL interpreter will translate the speech from the show into BSL form in a position that is visible to the audience.

Captioning

Captioning converts the spoken word, song, sound effects and offstage noises into text. At the Young Vic, our captioning is delivered as a speech-to-text transcription (STT). STT is similar to live subtitles. A highly-trained professional uses a specially designed phonetic keyboard and software to transcribe the actors’ words verbatim. The text will appear on the caption unit slightly after it is spoken.

Relaxed Performances

Relaxed Performances are specially adapted shows, designed to make the experiencing of visiting the theatre more comfortable.

We will commit to the following in every Relaxed Performance we do at the Young Vic. Some productions will have extra adjustments which can be found in the Pre-Show Information document for each performance.

  • The audience area lights will remain on at a low level
  • Audience members should feel comfortable to move around, make noise, leave and re-enter the auditorium as often as they need.
  • Pre-show information will always be available on the production webpages as well as being emailed to bookers ahead of the performance date.
  • There will be an introduction to the Relaxed Performance at the start of the show, reminding the audience that it is a Relaxed Performance.
  • Consideration will be given to lighting and sound levels, considering any sensory sensitives
  • A quiet space will be available outside the auditorium, before, during and after the show. You can use this if they need some time away from the show. This is held in the Marie McKenna Room on the first floor and will have a variety of comfy chairs and fidget toys available. If you want to use the chill out space, just follow the signage or ask one of our ushers and they’ll be happy to direct you.
  • Ear defenders and fidget toys will be available at the Box Office.

Support available for your visit

Sound Enhancement

We use Sennheiser radio receivers to give you access to sound enhancement. These free assisted listening devices can be reserved on the Basket page when you book your tickets and you can collect them from our Front of House team upon arrival at the theatre.

At the theatre, you will be able to select an assisted listening device with headphones, bring your own headphones, or use an induction neck loop. If bringing your own headphones, they must have an 3.5mm jack to work with our devices.

Sound enhancement is available for every performance of every show.

Wheelchair Users

There are two types of spaces for wheelchair users. If you wish to remain seated in your wheelchair, please select a wheelchair space. If you want to transfer from your wheelchair to a seat in the theatre, please select wheelchair transfer. If you would like to book a wheelchair space or transfer, please register your access requirements with us to book the best access seats at concessionary rates online.

Assistance Dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome at the Young Vic. If you are planning a visit, please let us know in advance which performance you will be attending by calling our Box Office on 020 7922 2922 or e-mailing [email protected]. Please note your assistance dog will need to accompany you into the auditorium.

Seating Information

Our standard main house seating consists of long benches with backrests. Both the seat and backrest are cushioned. Balcony and Gallery benches are high seats, meaning you rest your feet on a pole provided as opposed to the ground, and the seat folds down for you to sit on. The dimensions of our seats are 980mm x 410mm. Pictures of both seats are available below.
