A Statement from the Young Vic - 20 March 2020

Following UK government advice, we have now made the difficult decision to cancel our current production of Nora and postpone our upcoming productions of Orfeus and Conundrum. LIFT Festival has also cancelled their 2020 festival, which includes our co-production of The Second Woman.

We ask that you please bear with our small but brilliant Welcome Team as they deal with a huge number of ticket holders for the above shows.

As a charity, we rely on ticket sales for a substantial portion of our income, and the insecurity ahead is a huge worry for those who work for and with us, as it is for the theatre sector as a whole. Therefore - if you can afford to - please consider donating the price of your ticket, or another amount however large or small, to the Young Vic.

Part theatre, part dance and part visual art installation, Okwui Okpokwasili’s Bronx Gothic delves into her memories of growing up in the Bronx, before emerging into a breathtaking exploration of girlhood.

Created in collaboration with Peter Born, in this UK premiere, Bronx Gothic draws on inspiration from West African griot storytelling to ask what it means to be brown in a world that values whiteness.

Okwui Okpokwasili is a 2018 MacArthur ‘Genius Award’ recipient.

'In language that is by turns blunt and poetic, crudely funny and incantatory, Ms. Okpokwasili conjures and probes this adolescent friendship, a jumble of insults, anger and love…A magnetic performer'  The New York Times

'Ruthlessly clean and clever… Okpokwasili puts the threat in triple threat.' Time Out New York

'Seriously, go see it. It's riveting.' LA Times

'I knew I just had to programme it here at the Young Vic. Bronx Gothic not only plays with form; it plays with my heart. And it is ultimately a magnificent performance' YV Artistic Director Kwame Kwei-Armah
