Dear Young Vic…
As we approached the surreal milestone of 16 March 2021 - a year since the YV closed its theatre doors to audiences as a result of the pandemic – conversations began about how we might mark this moment for ourselves and our community. What would be a fitting way to record and archive the year we had just lived through? How could we capture the loss and the hurt for the theatre world and the people at its heart? How could we tell the stories of creativity, resilience and kindness that had also been a part of the last year?
Eventually, we settled on love letters, where different voices from the YV community could share their thoughts. These letters acknowledge important moments in the last year, giving thanks to all those who have kept us going, celebrating the exceptional art, projects, and events created in the face of extraordinary challenges, and taking a moment to dream of what theatre’s return might look like.
In the words of our Chair of the Board, Glenn Earle:
“We dedicate this document to our staff, collaborators, supporters, friends and audiences. We look forward to the day we can gather in the walls of the building once again, to feel the lights dim and the hushed silence fall in the space, in the presence of art being made before our eyes.”
