#Movember | 5 things to get you talking about male mental health this month

By Anonymous (not verified) 18 Nov 2016

Each November, men around the world ditch their razors for Movember - the annual event which aims to raise awareness for men's health issues, from prostate cancer to depression. Did you know that around the world, on average we lose a man to suicide every minute of every day? Because too many men are struggling alone, we've found 5 things to get everyone talking about male mental health this month.

VISIT: Being A Man Festival at the Southbank Centre

Now in its third year, Being A Man celebrates boys and men, and addresses the pressures of masculine identity in the 21st century. What better way to get you talking than to immerse yourself in an entire weekend's worth of events? Find out more and book your visit next weekend 25 - 27 Nov.

READ: Reasons To Stay Alive by Matt Haig

There's a reason why Matt Haig's memoir was in the British top ten bestsellers list for almost a year. His moving, yet joyous personal account about dealing with mental health and making the most out of  life is, according to Amanda Craig, "a life-saving book". Buy the book now or download the Kindle Edition.

MAN: ...Your Local on International Men's Day
man-your-local-02-300x298
This year, CALM are encouraging men to get talking by asking pubs up and down the land to use their #ManDictionary beer mats on 19 November. The beermats are designed to challenge stereotypes with piss-take puns that reveal what men expect of themselves and each other. And they're pretty darn stylish too. You can #ManYourLocal this weekend by ordering some from CALM and persuading your local drinking tavern to get involved.

WATCH: Of Two Minds on Netflix

Described by Variety as "intelligent and compassionate", this award-winning documentary follows four people with bipolar disorder over a three year period. The film has been widely praised for showcasing the stories of a range of different types of people dealing with the same illness, showing that it really can affect anyone. Why not hold a screening party, eat plenty of popcorn and then TALK about it with your all mates.

Don your history cap and get down and historical at the Wellcome Collection in Euston. Their latest exhibition follows the rise and fall of the mental asylum and asks whether and how it could be reclaimed as the original idea it represented: a place of refuge, sanctuary and care. Find out more and pop in for a visit any day Tues - Sun.

So, what are you waiting for? Get involved and get talking!

Living With the Lights On (7 - 23 Dec), Mark Lockyer's own personal story about battling his bipolar disorder, almost cost him his life as well as his flourishing career in theatre.
