A Statement from the Young Vic - 20 March 2020

Following UK government advice, we have now made the difficult decision to cancel our current production of Nora and postpone our upcoming productions of Orfeus and Conundrum. LIFT Festival has also cancelled their 2020 festival, which includes our co-production of The Second Woman.

We ask that you please bear with our small but brilliant Welcome Team as they deal with a huge number of ticket holders for the above shows.

As a charity, we rely on ticket sales for a substantial portion of our income, and the insecurity ahead is a huge worry for those who work for and with us, as it is for the theatre sector as a whole. Therefore - if you can afford to - please consider donating the price of your ticket, or another amount however large or small, to the Young Vic.

At the Young Vic, we are committed to ensuring that everything we do is as environmentally responsible and sustainable as possible. We are proud of our 4 Star Creative Green accreditation from Julie’s Bicycle, and will continue to work with them and other theatres on ways to reduce our carbon footprint.

In partnership with Julie’s Bicycle, we are committed to:

  • Communicate better with our audiences, artists, staff and stakeholders on our carbon footprint
  • Monitor and reduce our levels of energy usage and waste creation
  • Understand and act upon measures that we can take to ease this process.

Measures that we have taken already include:

  • Install LED lighting in the theatre corridors
  • Install a more energy efficient lift
  • Work with ethical and environmental suppliers, from stationary to green energy, from sets to waste management
  • Engage staff in sustainable initiatives, such as our roof garden.
  • Continue to reduce our waste, such as removing plastic cups from the bar during daytime hours and cutting down on printing in our offices.

Each department within the theatre has its own tailored Action Plan on how it can reduce its environmental impact.

The Cut Bar sources food and drink from local and ethical suppliers, providing fresh, seasonal food all year round.

The Young Vic is committed to working with the London Theatre Consortium to further reduce our environmental impact including their involvement in Julie’s Bicycle and Arts Council England’s Accelerator Programme.

We are well serviced by public transport links, with both Southwark (Jubilee Line) and Waterloo (Waterloo & City, Bakerloo, Northern and Jubilee Lines) just a short walk away. We encourage our audiences to travel via public transport.

It's a big (green!) world in here.
