AUDIO DESCRIPTION

Audio Description is a live verbal commentary on the visual elements of a production. It is delivered in-between dialogue on stage and is picked up by an easy-to-use headset.

If you require audio description, please register your access requirements with us to book the best access seats at concessionary rates for the below performances online.

Free touch tours are available to book on dates of Audio Described performances, starting from 1pm for matinees and 6pm for evening performances. Touch tours provide a chance for visually impaired or blind people to get to know the stage, set, and costumes used in the production.

Our upcoming Audio Described performances are as follows:

Entertaining Mr Sloane: Saturday 18 October, 2.30pm & Thursday 23 October, 7.30pm

Ohio: An Audio Guide will be created introducing audiences to the set and the Bengsons which can be listened to ahead of time; therefore, audiences who would usually benefit from audio description can book into any performance.

Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo: Saturday 17 January, 2.30pm and Thursday 22 January, 7.30pm

Museum of Austerity:  An Audio Description Introduction will be available 2 weeks before the performance. We will link to it here when it becomes available. The full text guide to the written materials in the Museum of Austerity can be listened to here.

BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE

CAPTIONING

Captioning converts the spoken word, song, sound effects and offstage noises into text.  At the Young Vic, our captioning is delivered as a speech-to-text transcription (STT). STT is similar to live subtitles. A highly-trained professional uses a specially designed phonetic keyboard and software to transcribe the actors’ words verbatim. The text will appear on the caption unit slightly after it is spoken.

If you require captioning, please register your access requirements with us to book the best access seats at concessionary rates for the below performances online.

Our upcoming Captioned performances are as follows:

An Oak Tree: Wednesday 14 May, 7.30pm (Miranda Yates)

Entertaining Mr Sloane: Monday 20 October, 7.30pm & Friday 31 October, 7.30pm

Ohio: All performances will have creative captioning, meaning the captions will be integrated into the projections on the screen at the back of the stage.

Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo: Saturday 10 January, 2.30pm & Friday 23 January, 7.30pm

Museum of Austerity: Captions can appear within the headsets if required

SOUND ENHANCEMENT

We use Sennheiser radio receivers to give you access to sound enhancement. These free assisted listening devices can be reserved on the Basket page when you book your tickets and you can collect them from our Front of House team upon arrival at the theatre.

To reserve an assisted listening device when you book, please sign up for Access Booking Online.

When you arrive at the theatre, you will be able to select an assisted listening device with headphones, bring your own headphones, or use an induction neck loop. If bringing your own headphones, they must have an 3.5mm jack to work with our devices.

Devices will be cleaned thoroughly before and after every use.

Sound enhancement is available for every performance of every show.

Museum of Austerity: Large over-ear headphones are used within the exhibition which can encompass a behind-ear hearing aid. There is a volume control allowing independent control of volume in the left or right ear, a 3.5mm mini-jack socket for hearing aids with direct input cable and a personal induction loop for hearing aids with a T-setting

RELAXED PERFORMANCES

Relaxed Performances are specially adapted shows, designed to make the experiencing of visiting the theatre more comfortable.

If you don’t like the lights being dark in the auditorium, the lights and sounds on stage being extra bright or extra loud, if you need to make noise or just like to move around a little more or leave the space and come back... this performance is for you.

We will commit to the following in every Relaxed Performance we do at the Young Vic. Some productions will have extra adjustments which can be found in the Pre-Show Information document for each performance.

  • The audience area lights will remain on at a low level

  • Audience members should feel comfortable to move around, make noise, leave and re-enter the auditorium as often as they need.

  • Pre-show information will always be available on the production webpages as well as being emailed to bookers ahead of the performance date.

  • There will be an introduction to the Relaxed Performance at the start of the show, reminding the audience that it is a Relaxed Performance.

  • Consideration will be given to lighting and sound levels, considering any sensory sensitives

  • A quiet space will be available outside the auditorium, before, during and after the show. You can use this if they need some time away from the show. This is held in the Marie McKenna Room on the first floor and will have a variety of comfy chairs and fidget toys available. If you want to use the chill out space, just follow the signage or ask one of our ushers and they’ll be happy to direct you.

  • Ear defenders and fidget toys will be available at the Box Office.

Some people who might benefit from a Relaxed Performance include:

  • People with learning disabilities, additional sensory and communication needs or who are neurodivergent.

  • People who want to be able to go to the toilet during performances.

  • People who prefer a more “relaxed” approach to going to the theatre.

If you would like to specifically book for a Relaxed Performance, please register your access requirements with us to book the best access seats at concessionary rates for the performances below online.

Museum of Austerity: You may leave the exhibition whenever you choose, however there is no readmittance. Sensitive content can be removed individually from the experience, so please discuss this with a host on the day if you feel this might be useful for you.
